Hato no Senki tells the story of a young man named Hato Yokoyama that plays a game called DDS-NET in which players can fight against demons. He encounters a Pixie being attacked by other demons and protects her. When the game prompts him to kill her to receive an item, he refuses and discovers a strange symbol has appeared on his hand. This symbol teleports him to an area where he meets a young girl that Hato assumes to be an NPC. Cu Chulainn appears addressing the girl as princess and assumes Hato is another demon. His demeanor changes when he discovers the icon on Hato's hand and explains that Hato is the Messiah. He asks Hato to become his ally in protecting the princess.

In 1912, a young woman tracks down the elderly Nagakura Shinpachi, determined to hear the true story of the Demon of the Shinsengumi, the Vice Commander Hijikata Toshizou. Hijikata's story begins in 1859, when he is a violent young man that is honing his sword skills while peddling his family's medicine. Soon, in his quest to find stronger people to fight, Hijikata starts to come into contact with others who will eventually be his comrades in the Shinsengumi. Continuing on where the original series left off, it's back to character ATTRITION as familiar and endearing characters are revived and summarily executed in a race to put an end to the Granza-Cordea War. Tatsumi Hōjyō is a 17 year old dreamcatcher (yumegari) from the Houjyo clan who has to investigate the dreams of others and sometimes participate in them. A yumegari is bound by fate to a yumemori, one who watches the dreams of a Yumegari and prevents them from falling into an eternal sleep. When Tatsumi's mother and father, the preceding yumegari and yumemori, die in the execution of their duties, Tatsumi inherits the job. At the risk of being caught in the dreams, as happened with her parents, the yumegari Tatsumi is helped by a dreamseer (yumemori), called Kyosuke Kaga, a 28 year old novelist with whom she'll have to share a new life in Tokyo to try to understand more about her extraordinary powers and control them. However, their relation becomes more personal, despite the warnings of the Houjyo clan about the yumemori.
